Usually, varicocele in adolescents is found at the age of 12-14. At this age, boys begin to be routinely examined in schools. Doctors conducting the examination find signs of pathology. Often, this disease becomes a discovery for both the child and the parents.
As a rule, such a diagnosis is associated with the need for surgical treatment. In this situation, you must first of all contact a urologist and perform a mandatory ultrasound of the scrotum organs.
There are strict indications for the surgical treatment of varicocele:
pain in the scrotum;
violation of testicular development (diagnosed, including by ultrasound) on the side of the varicocele;
The third factor is not assessed in adolescents. In the absence of the first two factors, planned follow-up by a urologist with ultrasound of the scrotal organs after a year is shown.
Operations are performed in the smallest number of cases, more often doctors opt for observation.
Thanks to ultrasound, the doctor can confirm the presence of varicocele and assess the condition of the testicle, which will later be used as an indicator of the development of the disease.
Considering all of the above, among urologists, the question “how expedient it is to wait for testicular developmental disorders before performing an operation” remains controversial. From my own surgical experience, I can say that in 95% of cases, surgery for varicocele in adolescents, performed before the age of 16-18, allows you to restore the size of the testicle by an average of 30-50% (after surgery).
Therefore, the earlier the operation is performed, the better the prognosis for the restoration of testicular function.
